This will probably be pretty boring to read; I mostly just want to have it recorded for memory's sake.
I went to the OB on Wednesday, April 20, and convinced my doctor, Katherine Kent, that I needed to be induced. (I had a feeling she was bigger than the boys, and thank goodness I did induce, or she might have been 12 pounds!) So, we got on the schedule for Friday, April 22, Maggie's due date. However, on Thursday morning, I got a call from the hospital asking me if I wanted to come in that afternoon for induction. Needless to say, I was all for that! We dropped the boys off at our neighbor's house (until Lovey and Poppa got here around 6), and we went to the hospital at 4. (I ate my last "magic cupcake" on the way to the hospital...:) At UVA, they don't use Cytotech (an induction drug), so they used an inflatable catheter that was inserted into my cervix, along with a low dose of Pitocin. It helped me dilate to a 4, then they took it out, and upped the Pitocin drip. I made no progress after that for about 10 hours! At around 10pm on Thursday, I got my Epidural. It did not work very well. When he placed it, he said he was "conservative" with the dosage. Well, with the Pitocin contractions, it was hardly helping at all, so I did not sleep much Thursday night. Around 8 Friday morning, I was in tons of pain, so the anesthesiologist gave me a bolus of Litocane, which helped for about 45 minutes, but then wore off! Apparently, there was no Litocane in the Epidural drip. (When I was induced with the boys, I couldn't feel my legs at all with the Epidural, but I could feel my legs the whole time, except for that 45 minutes of Litocane with this induction.) At around 11am, I looked at Josh, while crying in pain, and told him I couldn't do it anymore!
Well, shortly after that, the pain turned to pressure, and I felt like it was time to push. (I had just been checked at around 11, and I was only dilated to 5 cm.) When I told the doctors, they thought it was "highly unlikely" that I had progressed that much that quickly, but when they finally checked me, I was a 10! The resident had me do a couple of "practice pushes", and her head was out! I pushed for less than 30 minutes, and Maggie was here! She was a whopping 10 pounds even, 21 3/4 inches long, born at 1:03pm on Good Friday, April 22, 2011. There was so much relief and joy when she cried immediately! I was shocked at her long, black hair! I held her briefly, then had to be sewn up. A first year resident was "learning" how to do this, so it took forever! I always get the "shakes" after I give birth, but with Maggie, it went on uncontrollably for about 2 hours. It was miserable because I couldn't even hold her without feeling like I was going to drop her. When I finally stopped shaking, I couldn't keep my eyes open, I was so exhausted! So, I ended up sleeping for about 2 hours, and then I at least felt functional. But, for all those reasons, I feel like I didn't get to bond with Maggie as early as I would have liked to. Dr. Schmidt ended up being the attending who delivered her, and I was very pleased with the job he did.
Mark and Seth came with Lovey and Poppa up to meet Maggie at around 6 Friday evening. Mark really enjoyed it, and Seth was indifferent. We have a sweet video of Mark singing "Jesus Loves Me" to her to get her to stop crying. She struggled a bit with jaundice, so we didn't get to go home til Sunday - Easter. She also got down to 8 pounds, 13 ounces since my milk didn't come in til day 4! We went for several weight checks and supplemented a couple of feeds with formula. But, once my milk came in, she did just fine.
Russell and Karen were here the first week, and my Mom came the second week. They were such a huge help, especially in getting the boys where they needed to be! I'm so thankful they were able to be here. Maggie is such a good baby - she fusses when she needs something, and that's about it! I am LOVING having a girl! She wears a headband or bow almost every day and gets kissed countless times a day by me, her daddy, and her brothers! The boys are adjusting really well to having her. They both like to help me with her, and most comments from people are that she looks a lot like Mark. She has a much darker complexion than the boys. Her eyes are dark, but really look like they will change colors as she gets older. When I was about 36 weeks pregnant with her, a woman in our church prophesied over me that she would be "peace" to our family. That has been absolutely true so far. She is such a great addition to our family, and I am so thankful for the miracle that she is! We love you so much, Baby Maggie!
